Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding is one of the most important ways to support the health of both mother and baby, but it’s not always easy. From questions about latching and milk supply to finding the right support after leaving the hospital, every mom’s journey is unique. In the Texas Panhandle, families sometimes face added challenges like distance from services, limited local providers, or coverage gaps. This page offers practical tips, local resources, and support connections to help every mother make the choice that’s right for her and her baby, whether that’s breastfeeding, pumping, combination feeding, or formula feeding.
Quick Tips for Breastfeeding Success
Latch Issues
If breastfeeding is painful or baby seems frustrated, the latch may need adjusting. Try repositioning, and don’t hesitate to reach out to a lactation consultant or CHW for guidance.
Pain or Soreness
Some tenderness is normal at first, but cracked or bleeding nipples are not. Using lanolin cream or adjusting position can help — and professional support makes a big difference.
Going Back to Work or School
Practice pumping and storing milk a week before returning. Know your rights: Texas law protects your right to pump at work or school.
Engorgement or Blocked Ducts
Warm compresses before feeding and gentle massage can help. If you develop a fever or severe pain, contact your provider right away.
Low Milk Supply
Feeding or pumping more often usually helps increase supply. Staying hydrated and getting rest (as much as possible) also supports milk production.
Pumping Guidance
Make sure your pump flanges fit properly and clean all parts after each use. Ask WIC, your provider, or a CHW about getting a pump if you don’t have one.
When to Ask for Help
If you feel pain that doesn’t improve, worry about baby’s weight, or feel overwhelmed, reach out to your provider, WIC, or a lactation consultant. Support is available.
Support Strategies
Community Health Worker (CHW) Home Visits
CHWs provide trusted, one-on-one support — checking in after birth, answering questions, and connecting families to local resources.
Medicaid & WIC Benefits
Texas Medicaid covers breast pumps and lactation services, and WIC offers peer counseling, classes, and 24/7 hotline support. Knowing these benefits are available helps moms access care earlier.
Peer Counselor Support
WIC peer counselors and local breastfeeding groups offer moms encouragement, real-life tips, and help troubleshooting common issues.
Telehealth Lactation Services
For moms in rural counties, telehealth visits with lactation consultants provide support without long travel times.
Warm Handoffs from Providers
When doctors or nurses directly connect a mother to a lactation consultant, WIC peer counselor, or CHW, it reduces drop-offs in care and builds confidence.
Postpartum Follow-Up
Regular postpartum check-ins give mothers time to ask questions about feeding, recovery, and baby’s growth — helping prevent problems before they get worse.
Texas Lactation Hotline
The Texas Lactation Hotline is a valuable resource dedicated to supporting breastfeeding mothers across the state. Staffed by certified lactation consultants, the hotline offers free, evidence-based information and assistance to address breastfeeding challenges, promote healthy feeding practices, and enhance maternal and infant health outcomes. By providing guidance on topics such as latching, milk supply, and weaning, the hotline empowers mothers to successfully navigate their breastfeeding journey. This support is essential for promoting breastfeeding as a critical aspect of maternal health and infant nutrition, helping to ensure that both mothers and babies thrive.
The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program provides essential breastfeeding support to promote maternal and infant health. WIC offers education, resources, and guidance to breastfeeding mothers, helping them overcome challenges and establish successful feeding practices. Participants receive access to breastfeeding consultations, peer support, and nutritional counseling, ensuring they have the knowledge and confidence to breastfeed effectively. By fostering a supportive environment, WIC plays a vital role in encouraging breastfeeding, which is crucial for the health and development of infants and the well-being of mothers. This support contributes to improved health outcomes for families and strengthens the foundation for lifelong wellness.

La Leche League International (LLLI) is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to providing support, education, and encouragement to breastfeeding mothers. Through local groups and trained volunteers, LLLI offers a welcoming community where mothers can share experiences, seek advice, and find solutions to breastfeeding challenges. The organization promotes the importance of breastfeeding for both maternal and infant health, advocating for breastfeeding as the optimal feeding choice. LLLI also provides a wealth of resources, including literature, online support, and training for leaders, empowering mothers to achieve their breastfeeding goals and fostering a supportive environment for families worldwide.
