VIBRANT MOMS: Verifying and Implementing evidence-Based pRograms for Addressing Needed Transformations in Maternal Outcomes, Measures, and Support

Pregnancy-related complications, such as preeclampsia, pose serious risks to both moms and babies in Texas. These challenges are further intensified in the Texas Panhandle, where many counties lack adequate access to maternity care services.

Through this project, we are focusing on six counties with significant health disparities: Deaf Smith, Gray, Parmer, Potter, Randall, and Swisher.

Our mission is to reduce preeclampsia rates by increasing awareness, promoting prevention strategies such as low-dose aspirin (LDA) use for at-risk populations, and addressing the broader challenges moms face in accessing quality healthcare during and after pregnancy.

Maternity Healthcare Gaps:
Improving Access and Saving Lives

In the Texas Panhandle, many moms face a significant challenge: limited access to nearby healthcare options during critical times in their pregnancy. These areas, known as maternity healthcare deserts, often lack enough hospitals or doctors to provide the care moms need. This makes it especially difficult to receive essential care before and after giving birth.

Recent data highlights the severity of the issue: Texas has a maternal mortality rate higher than the national average, and experts estimate that 9 out of 10 of these deaths could be prevented. Alarmingly, most of these tragedies occur after childbirth, when mothers still require ongoing medical attention to stay healthy.

One of the most pressing concerns is preeclampsia—a condition marked by high blood pressure during pregnancy. Cases of preeclampsia have surged by 37% since 2017. Effective monitoring and timely treatment are crucial, yet such care is often unavailable in maternity healthcare deserts.

To address these challenges, the Vibrant Moms Coalition is focused on reducing preeclampsia rates through prevention strategies, including education and promoting low-dose aspirin (LDA) for at-risk moms. By improving access to care and equipping women with the tools and knowledge they need, we are working to ensure moms receive life-saving support during and after pregnancy—and, ultimately, save lives.

It's Time to Support Moms

Our goal is to understand the challenges and problems that moms experience related to their health and accessing healthcare, the resources that are available to them, and the priorities related to health during and after pregnancy.
