Who are Community Health Worker's?
Community Health Workers (CHWs) are trusted neighbors and partners who understand the challenges families face in the Texas Panhandle. They bridge the gap between communities and healthcare by offering guidance, support, and advocacy. From answering questions and connecting families to local resources, to walking alongside mothers during pregnancy and postpartum, CHWs make care more personal, accessible, and reliable.
What do CHW's do in VIBRANT MOMs
Why CHWs Matter in the Panhandle
Many counties in the Panhandle are considered maternity care deserts, meaning they have few or no local OB/GYN providers or labor and delivery services. For many families, this means traveling long distances for prenatal appointments or delivery, a challenge made even harder by transportation, cost, and insurance barriers.
Meeting families where they are, through home visits, community events, and local outreach, CHWs bring services directly into neighborhoods and homes. This personal approach helps families who may struggle with transportation or work schedules still get timely support during pregnancy and postpartum.
Breaking down barriers — CHWs provide bilingual education and plain-language materials so information is clear and accessible. They help families navigate complex systems like Medicaid or WIC, and reduce the confusion that can keep mothers from getting the care they need.
Building trust — Because CHWs live and work in the same communities they serve, families often feel more comfortable opening up to them. This trust makes it easier to share concerns, ask questions, and follow through on care plans that support healthier pregnancies and stronger outcomes.
